Severance Leaders Push for Dedicated ZIP Code to Address Local Mail and Emergency Service Issues

In November 2025, the Town of Severance, Colorado, joined a group of 24 U.S. communities in Washington, D.C., to discuss ZIP code boundaries with federal lawmakers. Mayor Matthew Fries and Town Manager Nicholas Wharton met with Colorado’s U.S. Senators to explain the effects of not having a dedicated ZIP code for Severance. Reported issues include delayed mail, confusion for emergency services, higher insurance costs, and lost internet sales tax revenue. Town officials say these problems affect local growth and economic activity.

Mayor Fries stated that a unique ZIP code can help communities provide better services and establish a clear identity. The coalition’s visit followed the introduction of several bipartisan bills in the U.S. Senate to address ZIP code boundary concerns. In July 2025, the House of Representatives passed two related bills, which are now under Senate review.
