DeKalb police ask for help finding suspects involved in birthday celebration shooting

Officials with the DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) recently released new pictures and information in the hopes of getting the public’s help identifying the person or persons responsible for killing a young woman celebrating her birthday.

Police released three photos taken from security cameras outside of an Exxon gas station in the 3000 block of Moreland Avenue that show suspects carrying weapons, with one wearing a Chucky mask from the popular horror movie franchise, in the early morning hours of Oct. 26.

At approximately 2:27 a.m., officers said they were called to a reported shooting outside of the gas station. They determined 21-year-old Kinaya Hightower of Griffin was celebrating with friends outside of the gas station, just days before her birthday, when two groups of people starting shooting. Investigators said Hightower, an innocent bystander, was caught in the crossfire and died of her injuries.

“The suspects left the scene before police arrived,” said officials. “Investigators have obtained pictures of people of interest, which we to be shared with the public in the hopes of identifying them and finding justice for Ms. Hightower.”…
