$2 billion plan targets Suncoast’s most dangerous roads

SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN) — Regional planners are rolling out a new long-range transportation strategy designed to make some of Sarasota and Manatee counties’ most dangerous roads safer and more resilient during storms.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) recently adopted a $2 billion blueprint that uses crash data to identify roadway “hot spots,” focusing on areas with high numbers of serious injuries and fatalities.

Officials say the plan does not take a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, each corridor will receive different improvements based on its specific issues, such as speeding, unsafe crossings, limited lighting, or poor storm drainage.

“We look at anything from re-engineering speeds to slowing traffic down in certain areas,” said MPO Executive Director David Hutchinson. “We also look at crossings.”…
