Hill Country sheriff’s office warns of vehicle burglaries targeting disabled veteran plates

Hays County has lately seen a rash of vehicle burglaries targeting cars and trucks with disabled veteran license plates, according to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators with the office’s auto theft unit believe that criminals are targeting the vehicles out of the belief that veteran-owned vehicles are more likely to contain a firearm, the office said Thursday in a Facebook post. The burglaries have been especially common in the Buda area, the office said.

On Monday, two vehicles in Hays County were stolen and one was burglarized by suspects that had driven from Travis County in a stolen vehicle, said Clint Pulpan, a spokesperson for the office, in an email. One of the vehicles stolen had disabled veteran plates, and the office has videos of the suspects trying to enter other vehicles with such plates, he said…
