NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – As of Dec. 4, data from the New Orleans City Council crime dashboard showed there were 105 murders in the city. That figure represents a 6% drop compared to the same time last year, but when compared to 2022, when the city had 243 homicides, the murder rate has dropped more than 56%. Jeff Asher has been compiling crime data through November and says the city may reach a historic low not seen in decades.
“Even including the tragedy of Jan. 1 on Bourbon Street, New Orleans is on pace through November to have the fewest murders since 1970,” Asher said.
Asher is a data analyst and co-founder of AH Datalytics. He says his research of murders through November shows other major cities like Philadelphia and Detroit are also on track to see record-low murder rates. He says nationally, murders are down about 20%, but New Orleans is seeing an even bigger decline. Asher said he can’t pinpoint a singular reason for the drop in murders…
