Halong rebuild efforts slowing down for winter, while state hopes to move evacuees into more long-term shelter

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – As the extremity of winter weather increases across Western Alaska, rebuilding efforts in Western Alaskan communities have slowed down, according to state officials.

With temperatures dropping along with visibility, around 40% of flights to affected communities were cancelled in recent days, according to Jeremy Zidek, spokesperson for the State of Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

“That weather has really just gotten much more difficult to operate under,” Zidek said. “We knew that time was going to come.”…
