TULLAHOMA, TN – Authorities in Tullahoma are investigating the tragic deaths of a 50-year-old grandfather, James Alexander Smith, and his 3-month-old granddaughter, who were found deceased after being mauled by pit bulls.

The incident occurred at a residential address in Tullahoma, approximately 75 miles southeast of Nashville. Responding police officers reportedly killed the dogs to halt the attack. “Regrettably, it was obvious that both victims were deceased,” stated a news release from the District Attorney General’s Office for Tennessee’s 14th Judicial District.

Investigators are working to determine the precise cause of death for Smith and his granddaughter, and whether the mauling took place after they had already passed away. It remains unclear at this time if criminal charges will be filed in connection with the case.

District Attorney Craig Northcutt confirmed that the dogs remained at the scene of the mauling, but their ownership has not yet been established. NBC affiliate WSMV of Nashville reported that a total of seven pit bulls resided at the home.

A neighbor, Rebecca Adams, informed WSMV that the dogs frequently escaped their yard and pursued other pets in the neighborhood. However, she noted that she had never witnessed them display aggression towards people.

The District Attorney General’s Office stated that investigators are currently examining the animals’ history and “other potential issues that may have contributed to this situation.” The other dogs found at the residence have been taken into custody by the local animal control agency.
