Son of 85-year-old woman attacked with hammer thanks good Samaritans

OLATHE, Kan. – The family of the 85-year-old woman attacked with a hammer while grocery shopping in Olathe Sunday says she is alert and recovering.

Patricia Cowart’s son, Kent McCollum, shared images of the gruesome attack outside Whole Foods Market at West 119th Street and Black Bob Road. McCollum says good Samaritans who intervened likely saved her life.

“She’s always been an optimistic, positive, active woman. She loves to travel, she loves to work out, she loves to hike,” McCollum said of his mother.

Cowart was loading groceries into her trunk in the Olathe Pointe Shopping Center just after noon Sunday. A good Samaritan who declined an on-camera interview said he heard Cowart scream and realized a man was viciously attacking the elderly woman in the face with a hammer…
