Norfolk Residents Warned of Jury Duty Phone Scam Impersonating Sheriff’s Office

The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in the Norfolk, Virginia area. Callers pretend to be from the Sheriff’s Office. They claim the recipient missed jury duty and must pay a fine to avoid jail. Several citizens have reported these calls. The scammers use a computer-generated number from Temperanceville, VA, and a fake employee name.

Sheriff Joe Baron stated that the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office does not ask for money over the phone. The office also does not notify people about jury duty or warrants by phone.

Official jury duty notices are delivered in person by deputies or posted at the residence…
