Special Olympics holds annual Polar Plunge at Raccoon River Park

DES MOINES, Iowa — Special Olympics Iowa held their annual Polar Plunge at the Raccoon River Park where hundreds experienced the new “pool on wheels.”

The Polar Plunge offers individuals and local businesses the opportunity to support Special Olympics athletics and Unified partners by taking a dip and raising funds. Participation includes solo or teams, tossing the boss, and volunteering. Those not taking the plunge can register as a “chicken” to raise pledges.

New this year at Raccoon River Park, the jumpers plunged into a mobile trailer. The state-of-the art “pool on wheels” allows Special Olympics Iowa to expand hosting opportunities and take the plunge anywhere in the state.

The youngest participant on Saturday was just nine years old and said she’s glad she’s helping others even if it means being a little chilly…
