Des Moines plows in good shape, ready for a mini round two this weekend

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines Public Works crews say they’re ready for another round of winter weather, even though this weekend’s snow is not expected to be as severe as last weekend’s storm.

After last weekend’s major snowfall, the department reports that most of its plows and equipment came out of the storm in good condition. Public Works says the majority of the 100 pieces of snow-fighting equipment “survived” and are ready to roll again for a smaller round two.

Last weekend, Des Moines crews say they were able to push off 10 inches of snow in just over 27 hours. Their goal is to finish clearing all main roads and neighborhoods within 24 hours after the final snowflake falls. They say it’s still a win considering it was the first major snowfall of the season and a big one.

The city issued more than 900 snow ordinance parking citations during last weekend’s storm. This weekend, officials are again reminding drivers to move their vehicles off the 17 main snow routes while it’s actively snowing. After the snow stops, crews shift their focus to neighborhood streets, meaning drivers need to get cars off those smaller roads once the last flakes fall…
