Claim that Milwaukee is ‘lawless’ is a matter of perception | Letters

A. Guse’s letter to the editor, “From street takeovers to shootings, Milwaukee lawless city,” reminded me of the adage “perception is reality.”

How we perceive something often forms what we believe to be true, regardless of objective fact. The writer is certainly correct in that this city has its problems, including violent crime, reckless driving and incidents of “unruly crowds,” which are valid concerns for all of us. However, I also feel the writer paints Milwaukee and its leaders with a broad brush.

I’ve lived in the city all my 68 years and spent 35 of those years as a social worker with Milwaukee Public Schools, traveling on a regular basis to just about every neighborhood in the city. Never once in doing my job or going about my personal business have I ever been threatened or a victim of crime…
