Okie Dokies Smokehouse reopens in Swannanoa, 14 months after Helene

SWANNANOA, N.C. (WLOS) — A longtime Swannanoa business has reopened its doors after sustaining major damage from floodwaters caused by Hurricane Helene in September 2024.

Okie Dokies Smokehouse, a popular barbecue spot located along US-70, welcomed its first customers back earlier this week. The restaurant confirmed its return and expressed gratitude to the community via a Facebook post.

“Reopening Okie Dokies is just one more step in the direction the whole community wants to go in,” said co-owner Steve Dunning. “From what we can tell, everybody wants to rebuild in one way or another. Each business that reopens, each home that’s rebuilt, every road that’s repaired, is one more step towards that goal.”…
