Police discover canines in “inhumane conditions,” leading to the arrest of a North Charleston owner

Richard Brian Nelson, 62, faces charges of ill treatment of animals, grand larceny valued at $10,000 or more, receiving stolen goods under $2,000 (enhanced), and obtaining goods under false pretenses following his arrest by North Charleston Police.​

Incident Details

Surveillance footage from November 14, 2025, showed Nelson striking a dog on its lower leg and foot inside his Dutton Avenue business. Officers found two dogs confined there continuously, living amid urine, feces, blood, without food, water, or bedding; Animal Control seized them for emergency custody.​
