Cold Weekend Ahead with First Alert Weather Day Monday in Mountains

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Bundle up this weekend. A cold high-pressure system is moving in, bringing below-normal temperatures and the potential for snow in the mountains as we head into early next week. First Alert Weather Day is in effect Monday in the mountains as a storm system brings snow to higher elevations.

Tonight: Dense Fog and Freezing Conditions

Don’t be surprised by dense fog developing overnight, especially east of the mountains. Temperatures drop near or below freezing across the entire forecast area. The North Carolina foothills and Piedmont (north of I-85) could see freezing fog, which may create hazardous driving conditions. If you’re heading out early Sunday, allow extra time and drive carefully.

Sunday: Dry but Still Cold

Fog gradually lifts by mid-morning Sunday. Despite a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures remain 5-10 degrees below normal, with highs in the upper 40s to mid-50s. Several cities across the Upstate will also be holding their annual Christmas parades. The one in Anderson Sunday afternoon looks dry but cool. Highs in the lower 50s with mostly cloudy skies. It’s also a good day to catch up on outdoor tasks before the next system arrives.

First Alert Weather Day Monday: Snow in the Mountains

A winter system moving in Sunday night into Monday brings snow to higher elevations of the mountain prompting a First Alert Weather Day. Snowfall totals are light with most areas only getting a trace, but some isolated spots could get up to around 2″. Snow is expected to develop late Sunday night and continue through Monday morning.

What you need to do: If you’re traveling in the mountains Monday morning, allow extra time and use caution. Roads could become slick, especially on higher elevation routes. Check road conditions before heading out and consider delaying travel if possible.

For the Upstate, it’s yet another round of chilly rain. Precipitation is light with most areas picking up less than a quarter of an inch.

Tuesday and Beyond: Dry Pattern Returns but more bitter cold next weekend

Dry conditions return Tuesday with temperatures dipping well below normal due to northeast winds. By midweek, temperatures warm back toward normal. Wednesday could be breezy, especially in the mountains, with gusts potentially exceeding 30 mph. Another cold front may arrive late Thursday into Friday bringing us our next round of rain for the Upstate and potential wintry weather for the mountains. Another blast of cold air is looking likely for the end of next week. We’ll give you the First Alert once we get a better idea of what we could see…
