Massachusetts Attorney General Secures $45 Million Settlement with Eversource Energy for Ratepayer Relief

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell reached a $45 million settlement with Eversource Energy, which will lower electric and gas bills for ratepayers. The settlement resolves 16 docket matters, some more than a decade old, including issues like vegetation management and pension costs. Campbell said the action reflects her commitment to affordability and consumer protection.

AG Campbell said, “Affordability and consumer protection are at the forefront of our work.” She also commended the Department of Public Utilities for helping reduce financial burdens on Massachusetts residents. According to the Massachusetts Government, the settlement provides tangible relief: NSTAR Electric customers will receive a $20 million rate credit, while Eversource Gas of Massachusetts customers will see over $25 million in annual savings after rates are adjusted following Eversource’s acquisition of Columbia Gas of Massachusetts.

The settlement also addresses specific programs and savings. NSTAR Electric’s Resiliency Tree Work (RTW) program, originally aimed at improving grid reliability, had invoice discrepancies that AG Campbell’s team challenged, resulting in $2.5 million in customer credits to be distributed over 12 months starting January 1, 2026.
