Local sorority chapter celebrates 50 years with salute to senior citizens

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — It was a 50-year regional celebration of volunteer work in the community on Sunday.

The Ivy Foundation nonprofit projects of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority saluted their many members who serve senior citizens in Northern Virginia.

Leading Arlington and Alexandria dignitaries attended Sunday afternoon’s luncheon tribute to thank the group for their support of schools, health care initiatives, and neighborhood service projects.

“We do things like food delivery and paint parties, and sometimes it’s just doing a walk,” said nonprofit head Crystal Lander. “Sometimes it’s mentoring, making calls. Our impact is really showing up where needed.”…
