Lawsuit could cut $2 million from Russell County budget

RUSSELL COUNTY, ALA. (WRBL) — Russell County has filed as a defendant in a lawsuit against Alabama’s Revenue Commissioner Vernon Barnett.

The lawsuit was filed in Montgomery by the cities of Tuscaloosa and Mountain Brook to maintain the Simplified Seller’s Use Tax (SSUT).

Russell County Commission Chairman, Chance Corbett says the SSUT was put in place for online purchases. The SSUT simplified it for online retailers that 8% of sales tax would be sent to Alabama then divided 60% to cities and 40% to counties…
