Lincoln Program Helps Older Adults and Multicultural Residents Use Public Transit More Easily

The City of Lincoln has released results from its ‘How to Ride Project.’ This initiative aimed to help older residents and people with limited English skills use public transportation. Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU) and Aging Partners worked together on the project. It was funded by a $19,885 AARP grant awarded in July 2024.

LTU Director Liz Elliott said the project focused on making transit accessible. The educational programs were intended to help people travel on their own for errands, medical visits, or social events. The project ran from July to early December 2024. Seventy-two community members took part.

The program offered six in-person training sessions on the StarTran bus system and one session on the BikeLNK bike share. Participants received 700 bus passes and 100 BikeLNK passes to use their new skills…
