New heights: Endangered Masai giraffe welcomes first calf at San Diego Zoo

Endangered Masai giraffe Mawe has stepped into motherhood for the first time welcoming her first calf last month, the San Diego Zoo announced Monday.

Visitors can now catch a glimpse of mom and the yet-to-be-named calf bonding in their maternity area in the zoo’s Urban Jungle giraffe habitat.

It’s a full-circle moment: both Mawe and the calf’s father, Chifu, were born at the zoo. The calf joins another little one, Lemayian, who was born in July, according to zoo officials…
