El Paso Man Charged with Filing False Report After Claiming Car Theft by Estranged Wife at Women’s Shelter

El Paso Police have recently charged a man for filing a false report regarding an allegedly stolen car, which was in fact in the hands of his estranged wife, who had taken refuge at a women’s shelter. According to the El Paso Police Department, Ruben Holguin Bonilla claimed his 2018 Chevrolet Equinox was taken from an apartment complex on November 21st, expressing a desire to press charges without pointing toward any suspects.

The case quickly evolved when the Auto Theft Task Force (ATTF) located the vehicle with Bonilla’s wife at the helm after she sought safety at a local women’s shelter in El Paso, a move made for personal reasons that she hoped would shield her from harm. The officers found that despite Bonilla’s claims, there was no theft, as the woman was legally married to the complainant, providing her with as much right to the Chevrolet Equinox as Bonilla himself…
