Urbandale school board discusses anti-bullying efforts, parent worries approaches are too passive

URBANDALE, Iowa — The Urbandale Community School District school board is discussing anti-bullying efforts just over one month after Urbandale high school student Miles Phipps died by suicide, whose family says was bullied.

A discussion, presented by superintendent Dr. Rosalie Daca and director of student services Stephanie Davis, took place Monday at a school board meeting. Local 5 was told Daca nor Davis were available for an interview on Monday. During the conversation, Dr. Daca emphasized that reporting incidences of bullying is crucial for the school to address it.

“The key component to bullying is it has to be reported,” Daca said. “I just wanted to make sure people understood; staff, students and families, that we do have a very tight protocol for bullying. Once reported, it is not ignored.”…
