From the Darkroom highlights preservation of an Ozarks art form

In an article published Dec. 7, 1985, Doris Williams of Aurora was photographed posing with her basket of naturally dyed yarns.

Williams explained that dying fibers with leaves and flowers gathered on walks through the Lawrence County countryside was her way of preserving an art of the Ozarks heritage.

“Natural dying is one way of educating people to the way our fathers used to do things,” she said. “After all, this was the only way they had of getting color.”…
