Takoma Park Launches Stop Sign Camera Program to Enhance School Zone Safety

The City of Takoma Park will implement an innovative stop sign camera enforcement program beginning in early 2026. The four-year pilot program was authorized through the Maryland General Assembly, SB0600, (https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/2025RS/bills/sb/sb0600E.pdf) and approved by the Takoma Park City Council.

Per Takoma Park Police: The pilot program targets school zones and aims to enhance pedestrian safety as part of the City’s commitment to Maryland’s Zero Deaths campaign and Montgomery County’s Vision Zero initiative. Highlighting the problem city officials are working to solve, a pilot study at dozens of Takoma Park intersections found there were thousands of daily violations, with violation rates reaching 87% at some locations.
