West Ada School District unveils plan for additional law enforcement on its campuses

Idaho’s largest school district announced a new campus safety proposal Wednesday calling for the hiring of its own law enforcement officers to serve as “Campus Sentinels.”

“They are police officers, but in plainclothes,” the West Ada School District’s chief communications officer Michelle Edmonds said. “They are POST [Peace Officer Standards and Training] certified, which is the highest level of certification [for] police officers.”

Unlike school resource officers (SROs), the proposed “Sentinels” would be employed by the school district rather than a local police department…
