Film screening and discussion spark community dialogue on gun violence

Rochester, N.Y. — Community members and advocates gathered Saturday for a screening of the Academy Award-nominated short film “Death by Numbers” by Sam Fuentes, a student who was shot in 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Hosted by the ROC Against Gun Violence Coalition and Councilmember Willie Joe Lightfoot Sr., the event highlighted the film’s examination of gun violence and emphasized the urgent need for community-driven solutions.

“It was very important that this young lady, Sam Fuentes, got to tell her story and it’s also important for her, like she said, to represent the voices of the students who are in her class who didn’t get a chance to speak, who didn’t get a chance to be part of a documentary or a film,” said Antonia Wynter. “Living in Rochester and being witness to a lot of violence and potential violence that is happening in our community. These are stories that even though they are specifically not Sam Fuentes’s stories, they mirror so many others who can be just like her.”…
