The McKinney Fire Department is reminding residents to follow safety guidelines when decorating for the holidays, especially with Christmas trees. The department notes that fires involving Christmas trees can grow quickly, so prevention is important.
Residents are advised to choose trees with fresh, green needles that do not fall off easily. Before placing the tree in a stand, cut two inches from the base of the trunk. Place the tree at least three feet away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, and candles. Do not block exits with the tree. Add water to the tree stand daily to keep the tree hydrated and reduce fire risk.
For lighting, use only lights tested by an independent laboratory. Check that lights are labeled for indoor or outdoor use as needed. Replace any light strings that are damaged or have loose bulb connections. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for connecting light strands. Do not use lit candles on or near the tree. Turn off all tree lights before leaving home or going to bed…
