Bishop State Community College empowers young women in manufacturing

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Some programs through a local community college are elevating young women in manufacturing.

FAME on the Coast and GLAM Camp at Bishop State Community College are making a difference in the career paths of young women who are excited to get their hands busy in the manufacturing industry.

“We love when our ladies come in because manufacturing is not just for men,” Bishop State Experiential Learning Coordinator Erica Gilkerson said.

More girls are learning that at an early age. That’s why GLAM, Girls Learning About Manufacturing, exists, to feed into the dreams of young female engineers.

“When I get older, I want to be a Disney Imagineer and build roller coasters,” 7th-grade GLAM Camp participant Emmalyn Chappell shared.

Through Bishop State’s GLAM summer camp, Chappell is already learning skills that will help her reach her career goals…
