Villager arrested in violent incident involving dementia patient she hoped to defraud

A resident of The Villages has been arrested in connection with a violent incident involving a dementia patient she had hoped to defraud.

Kara Lynne Johnson, 48, of the Village of Chitty Chatty, took the woman, who has been diagnosed with the onset of dementia, from Mississippi to the Days Inn on State Road 44 in Wildwood, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Johnson had absconded with the woman “with hopes to defraud her of her money.” The report did not disclose the relationship between Johnson and the woman.

Johnson, who was arrested in 2022 at the Lighthouse Point Bar & Grill, was drinking heavily in the shared motel room and was “inebriated.” The dementia patient tried to persuade Johnson to stop drinking for the night. This apparently enraged Johnson, who began “shouting profanities and was making threatening statements about causing physical harm” to the woman. Johnson “got into her face” and “pushed the bottom of her chin with a closed fist.”

Johnson also became “irate” with the phone in the hotel room. She slammed and banged the phone until it was inoperable. Johnson demanded that the Days Inn staff bring her a new phone and the staff complied with her wishes. However, the hotel’s general manager called law enforcement to report the violent incident…
