Governor Moore proclaims Winter Safety Week in Maryland

HANOVER, MD—Governor Wes Moore has officially proclaimed December 8 through 14, 2025, as Maryland Winter Safety Week, marking the eighth annual statewide initiative focused on preparing residents for, and safely responding to, winter weather hazards.

The Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) is spearheading the effort, partnering with key organizations including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Weather Service (NWS), the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Maryland Department of State Police (MDSP), and various other state and local agencies. The collective goal is to significantly increase public awareness and promote practical preparedness steps across the state.

MDEM Secretary Russ Strickland stressed the crucial need for advance preparation, noting that “Each winter brings hazards that can result in injuries, loss of life, and costly damage here in Maryland.” He added that by stressing the importance of being informed and taking safety precautions seriously, MDEM and its partners aim to “protect us all.” Secretary Strickland emphasized that building a culture of preparedness means weaving readiness into daily life, which includes checking on neighbors, staying informed on alerts, and knowing what to do when severe weather strikes…
