CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles is speaking publicly for the first time about the threats she faced following the killing of a Ukrainian immigrant on Charlotte’s light rail system, and the steps police took to protect her.
In an interview with WCNC Charlotte, Lyles said the aftermath of Iryna Zarutska’s death in August represented the lowest point of her tenure as mayor and forced a reckoning among city leaders.
