Pearl Harbor spirit, resilience, unity remembered

When retired Navy Cmdr. Clay Davis has visited the memorial that honors the Americans who died 84 years ago during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he’s struck by two things: “the deep sorrow of loss and the deep peace that has returned.

“I think that these memorials that rest in that beautiful landscape of Hawaii can help us reflect on something profound,” Davis said Sunday at a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony in Huntsville. “Even after violence, even after tragedy, peace can grow again, stronger than before.”

Davis, who wore a shirt printed with the memorials of the fallen U.S. ships, said it makes him feel connected to the history and heritage of “the sailors who never made it home, the Marines who stood their ground, the civilians whose lives were forever changed and the families who bore the burden of loss…
