That email isn’t what you think, law enforcement warns

Law enforcement is warning about a new scam that’s being called a “textbook” example of phishing.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the community to a recent rise in email and telephone scams involving messages that appear to be from well-known companies.

The emails from companies such as PayPal claim that a purchase has been made in the person’s name. In one case, the department said, the message claimed that a $475.98 MacBook order is “pending” and asks the recipient to call a phone number if the purchase was not authorized…
