Mililani Teens Badly Hurt In Nighttime E-Bike Smash With Car

Two teenagers are in serious condition after the e-bike they were riding collided with a car on Sunday night at the intersection of Alapoai Street and Kuahelani Avenue in Mililani. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded at about 8:40 p.m., and paramedics treated a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl at the scene before taking them to an emergency room in serious condition. Officials said the pair had been riding tandem on a single e-bike and were not wearing helmets. Police have not released any information about the driver or what led up to the crash.

According to Hawaii News Now, emergency crews treated both teens at the scene and rushed them to a hospital, and the outlet reported the collision happened at about 8:40 p.m. Sunday. Hawaii News Now also confirmed the victims’ ages and that neither teen was wearing a helmet.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that officials have not yet released details on how the crash unfolded, including whether the car struck the e-bike or the other way around. The Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division is investigating, and authorities have not identified the driver or commented on their role in the collision, according to the paper.

E-Bike Safety And Local Policy

The crash lands in the middle of a wider push to tighten e-bike rules on Oʻahu and get young riders to take safety more seriously. Earlier in 2025, the Honolulu City Council approved an e-bike safety measure that requires riders under 18 to wear helmets.
