The investigation into the fatal officer-involved shooting of Jamal Williams in Birmingham’s Kingston community has been transferred to the Jefferson County Bessemer Cutoff District Attorney’s Office. This development follows the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s decision to return the case to Birmingham police after the release of body camera and surveillance footage from the incident.
District Attorney Lynneice Washington emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the case. “We want to maintain the integrity of the case and whatever is done is done in a transparent manner, thorough manner and we are just going to abide by the evidence and the law,” she said.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency cited Alabama’s body-camera disclosure law and state Supreme Court precedent as reasons for stepping back from the investigation. When asked about concerns regarding the public release of the video, Washington stated, “No. It is what it is. The video shows what happened that night and how the person reacted, the young man and how the officer reacted so it is what it is.”…
