ACLU says automatic license plate readers are raising privacy concerns in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — The ACLU of Iowa released a report Tuesday morning raising concerns about how automated license plate readers (ALPRs) may be affecting privacy and civil rights across the state.

Small cameras are installed throughout Iowa, capturing images of license plates from passing vehicles every day. The ACLU says these cameras are helping build an “enormous surveillance network.”

The report explains that the images and data collected can be shared through national databases. Some cities without cameras of their own can still pay to access the information…
