Snow and a wintery mix on the way Thursday

DES MOINES, Iowa — Cold air has been pouring into the state on STRONG winds overnight and Wednesday, reflected in today’s temperature trace below. It will be a cold overnight.

We’ll see flurries in the morning Thursday, but accumulating precipitation will begin around midday and last into the evening hours. The Des Moines metro area will be on the southwestern edge/gradient of the precipitation that does fall, and that may include sleet and freezing rain along with snow at times.

We still have a fair amount of uncertainty regarding the Thursday forecast as of Wednesday afternoon, and that’s reflected in the snowfall prediction for the Des Moines metro area. Totals will depend how much falls as snow and how much will fall as other frozen precipitation types.

In any case, the afternoon commute will be slippery from Des Moines to the north and east. Two to three inches of snow will fall in the bright white area of the graphic below, and three or more inches in the blue area. Again, precipitation will fall from the middle of the day into the late evening hours, with a longer duration in the white and blue areas.

We can’t seem to have a Saturday without snow lately, and that will again be the case this weekend as snow looks to fall during the daytime and evening hours. We’ll keep you updated.

Highs are above, seven-day forecasts are below. Have a good one!…
