Arkansas corrections officers can now work as immigration agents under ICE agreement

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A newly signed agreement between the Arkansas Department of Corrections and the federal government will allow select corrections officers to work as immigration agents.

Memoranda of agreement, also referred to as 287(g) agreements, between the DOC and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, dated Dec. 2 and posted to the federal agency’s website on Dec. 9, say that ICE can train corrections employees and give corrections employees the power to act as immigration officers.

As immigration officers, they will be allowed to interrogate immigration detainees, execute warrants, issue immigration detainers and use the Homeland Security and ICE databases. Their immigration enforcement powers are limited…
