New Orleans culture bearers may be forced out of Musicians’ Village after property sale

New Orleans culture bearers living in Musicians’ Village will have to pay at least triple the rent they currently do or face being evicted after Habitat for Humanity sold their homes to a Metairie landlord earlier this year.

Over the last several weeks, the new landlord Sam Madi — who owns Stable Housing LLC, which bought the 50 rental units in Musicians Village for $1.57 million — left letters in their mailboxes informing them of the rent hikes, which kick in Jan. 1, 2026.

The rent increases come at the same time that the historic Black 7th Ward bar First and Last Stop faces eviction from a separate Metairie landlord and broader concerns about gentrification in Black neighborhoods in the city…
