SC gubernatorial candidate fights to have criminal case dismissed

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A Democratic candidate for governor is trying to clear his name after being arrested before launching his campaign for the state’s top office.

Charleston attorney Mullins McLeod was arrested for disorderly conduct in May after police said he caused a disturbance down at the Battery. An incident report stated he was walking around in his underwear and yelling.

In a press conference Tuesday morning, the campaign spoke publicly for the first time. McLeod’s attorney, Scott Bischoff, announced they are filing a motion to dismiss the case after failed negotiations with the city to have the charges dropped altogether.

“The night that Mr. McLeod was arrested, he was walking down the High Battery here in Charleston and doing nothing to call undue attention to himself. There was nothing about his conduct that interfered with the lawful enjoyment of the public space by anybody else. Nobody was around,” Bischoff said. “These three officers took it upon themselves to approach him in a way and immediately arrest him without asking any questions.”

McLeod was arrested in May, but video of his arrest was not widely reported on until after McLeod launched his campaign for governor in August. The video showed a shirtless McLeod in the back of a police car yelling obscenities and jumping nonsensically from topic to topic.
