On a normal day, you aren’t allowed to hunt for the hundreds of different species that call Presque Isle State Park home.
But two days a year, park officials shut down parts of the peninsula for its annual gun hunt, inviting hunters to help maintain the park’s deer population.
“We’re open for all forms of recreation. This is another recreational pursuit that we allow here, which is hunting,” said Holly Best, Presque Isle State Park Manager 3. “So, throughout the year, we are open more days for hunting for archery and for muzzle loaders, and for those events, we don’t have to close the park because it’s relatively safe for people to be in the park during those hunting seasons. But introducing the gun is a lot more hazard involved, so we do close the park for those events.”…
