New York City could be blanketed by snow this weekend as millions brace for a “mother lode” of cold air set to grip the Midwest and interior Northeast.
Freezing air from Northern Canada is forecast to hit large parts of the central and eastern United States in the coming days. “There is a massive area of air in northwestern Canada where temperatures are 20 to 30 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, and it is on its way southeastward into the U.S.,” AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said. “This is the mother lode of cold air and is a term I don’t use lightly.”
The fresh wave of Arctic air is the most recent in a series of bitterly cold blasts triggered by a displacement or weakening of the polar vortex in recent weeks. Portions of the Midwest, Tennessee Valley, and much of the Appalachians will experience the coldest conditions, but even in the areas east of the mountains from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston, temperatures will approach or exceed the low mark reached during the middle of this week…
