Avian flu is likely cause for numerous dead vultures found in Franklin County creek bed

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WFXR) After dozens of dead vultures were discovered in a creek bed near the intersection of Franklin Street and Dent Street, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) sent test samples to the University of Georgia’s Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study.

Preliminary results have detected a strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza, leading experts to believe that it’s the likely culprit.

“The presumption is that vultures, being scavengers,” Animal Science extension agent with Virginia Tech, Scott Baker said. “They may have picked it up as they were scavenging a bird that was already infected. Then they just passed from one to the other.”…
