DENVER (KDVR) — Authorities are warning people about an opioid found in Colorado that’s considered to be 100 times stronger than fentanyl.
Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid that was originally developed to tranquillize large animals, like elephants, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The DEA said it resembles fentanyl and cocaine, and comes in many forms, but it’s far more dangerous.
These Colorado laws go into effect on Jan. 1, 2026
The DEA said that it’s approximately 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl. Only .2 milligrams of carfentanil could be deadly, compared to fentanyl’s two milligrams.
The Centers for Disease Control said the opioid has been found in 37 states across the country, including the DEA finding hundreds of thousands of carfentanil pills in Los Angeles County this year. Now, authorities are speaking out after seizing it in Colorado…
