Woodburn High alum wins gold in international biology research competition

A young Woodburn scientist is gaining attention on an international stage.

This October, Woodburn High School alum Cassidy Garibaldo traveled to Paris, France, with 13 of her fellow University of Rochester biology students to present their year-long research project at an international conference. There, Garibaldo and her “Team PHAntom” gained recognition and won a gold medal for their research.

Garibaldo and her fellow students’ project was a system that uses bacteria to turn carbon dioxide, the gas that makes up most of Mars’ atmosphere, into a biodegradable plastic. The goal behind the project is that future Mars astronauts could produce basic materials on the planet instead of transporting them from Earth…
