The City of Birmingham says it will continue to support unhoused residents and maintain public spaces. Over the past week and a half, city staff and the HEART BHAM outreach team responded to concerns about people staying in Linn Park. They offered services and voluntary engagement. During this time, one person threatened outreach workers. Police were called, and the city gave a 48-hour extension to remove a tent. Tents are not allowed in city parks without approval.
Birmingham asks for unauthorized structures to be removed but allows people to stay in parks during regular hours. The city has invested in homelessness services. This includes $1 million for the Firehouse Shelter, $1.3 million for AIDS Alabama’s Way Station for youth, and over $800,000 each year in federal grants for emergency shelters and service providers…
