JOHNS ISLAND, S.C (WCBD) – One of the oldest farms in the nation hit a major milestone this year, and it is located right on Johns Island.
Legare Farms is located on the Stono River, sprawling 300 acres. The family-owned business has been passed on for many generations since it was first established in 1725. Solomon Legare farmed indigo, sea island cotton, and potatoes while raising cattle and sheep. Since then, the farm has been operating in the Charleston area for 300 years.
“We’re the ninth generation of farmers here on Johns Island, went from using horses, mules, and oxen to plow with,’ Thomas Legare, one of the owners and farmers, said. “Now we use tractors and equipment that we have had in the past – we’ve had tractors with cabs, air conditioning, and AM/FM radios, and that was a long way from plowing behind a mule like some of our ancestors did.”…
