Fatal crash during FWPD pursuit raises questions about when officers chase

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Fort Wayne police say a brief pursuit that began early Thursday morning ended when a fleeing vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian along Spy Run Avenue.

As the department investigates the crash, officials are laying out the split-second factors officers weigh when deciding whether to pursue and emphasizing that every pursuit is reviewed afterward.

The pursuit began about 6:03 a.m., when an officer attempted to stop a vehicle near Lawton Place and Griswold Drive. Police say the driver fled, turned onto Spy Run from East Fourth Street and struck a man in the roadway.
