Warming Shelters and Cold Weather Assistance Available for Kalamazoo Residents as Temperatures Drop

Temperatures in the Kalamazoo area are expected to drop to single digits this weekend. Wind chills may reach near zero. Local authorities have announced several warming shelters and centers to help residents stay safe. The City of Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) advise people to stay indoors to reduce the risk of hypothermia and frostbite.

Several facilities are open for those who need shelter. Ministry with Community at 500 N Edwards St will serve as an overnight warming shelter for adults only from December 1, 2025, through March 2026. Registration is required through Housing Resource Inc. Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries at 448 N Burdick St is open now. It accepts adults and children with parents who have valid local identification.

For daytime shelter, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Portage offers a warming center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Transportation is available. The Portage District Library and Portage Zhang Senior Center also have extended hours for people seeking warmth during the day…
