Attorney explains release of ex-CO who pleaded guilty in Robert Brooks’ death

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — David Walters, a former corrections officer at Marcy Correctional Facility, was released from prison this week pending an appeal of his guilty plea in connection to the Dec. 9, 2024 fatal bearing of Rochester native and inmate Robert Brooks, according to prosecutors.

Walters was released Wednesday from the Elmira Correctional Facility after posting $100,000 bond, prosecutors said.

He pleaded guilty Sept. 22 to second-degree manslaughter after admitting to standing by and watching as Brooks was beaten by several officers, according to prosecutors. He also admitted to verbally stopped a nurse from intervening. Walters was sentenced to 2 1/3-7 years in prison, prosecutors said…
